The Mubende Magistrate’s Court has ordered a recount of votes cast in the Buwekula South parliamentary election following a petition challenging the results of the closely contested race.
The ruling follows an application filed by Dedan Mubangizi, who disputed the declaration of Fred Tumwesigye as the duly elected Member of Parliament for Buwekula South. Mubangizi raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the tallying and declaration of results, arguing that the outcome did not accurately reflect the will of the voters.
In its decision, the court directed that a full recount of votes be conducted under strict supervision to ensure transparency, credibility, and compliance with electoral laws. The recount is expected to cover polling stations cited in the petition and will involve electoral officials and representatives of the concerned parties.
The court further ordered Fred Tumwesigye to meet the costs incurred by the applicant in filing and prosecuting the petition, a move seen as significant in reinforcing accountability in the electoral dispute process.
The recount exercise is anticipated to shed light on the contested results and determine whether the initial declaration will stand or be altered.
The development has heightened political attention in Buwekula South, with residents and political actors closely monitoring the process as the court moves to resolve the dispute in the interest of electoral justice.
