KAMPALA — Communities surrounding Lubigi Swamp have called on authorities to bolster security following the grisly discovery of human body parts in the wetland, sparking fear and anxiety among local residents.
The remains were reportedly found by children scavenging for recyclable materials, and preliminary reports suggest they may belong to a woman. The shocking find has left residents of Kawaala and Nansana demanding immediate action from law enforcement.
Local leaders and residents say the incident underscores the growing insecurity in the area, citing repeated cases of theft, violent attacks, and now the horrifying discovery in the swamp. “We cannot continue living in fear. The government must increase police patrols and ensure the swamp is monitored regularly,” said a community elder in Nansana.
Responding to the discovery, officers from the Kampala Metropolitan Police, including canine and forensic units, retrieved the remains for investigation. Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala confirmed that forensic analysis is ongoing to establish the identity of the victim and the circumstances surrounding the death. “We urge anyone with information to come forward to help solve this case,” Kawala said.
Despite the police response, residents remain concerned about their safety, particularly after dark, and are pressing for visible and sustained security measures. Community leaders warned that failure to act could embolden criminals and further erode public confidence.
Authorities have promised heightened patrols and intensified surveillance of the swamp, but locals say swift and consistent action is needed to restore peace and reassure the public.
