Schools across Uganda reopened on Tuesday as learners returned for the start of Term One under the revised 2026 academic calendar issued by the Ministry of Education and Sports.
The Ministry earlier adjusted the academic calendar, moving the start of the term to Tuesday, February 10, 2026, from the original schedule of February 2 — a decision officials said was necessary to ensure safety during the general election period.
In the official announcement, Dr Kedrace R. Turyagyenda, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Sports, underscored the importance of adhering to the revised schedule.
“Due to the general elections and in the interest of the safety of all learners, all schools and education institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday, February 10, 2026,” Dr Turyagyenda said. “We urge all school administrators and stakeholders to strictly observe the approved academic calendar to avoid disruptions.”
Schools ready for learners
School administrators across the country said they had finalised preparations to receive learners, including organising teaching staff, learning materials and classroom arrangements.
A head teacher at a government-aided school in Wakiso District said while lessons would begin immediately, some learners may require time to readjust to school routines.
“We are prepared to begin teaching, but some learners will need support to settle back into routine after the extended break,” the head teacher said.
Teachers call for learner support
Teachers’ representatives have cautioned that the prolonged holiday could affect learners’ concentration in the early weeks of the term, calling for a gradual return to full academic activity.
A senior teacher who spoke on condition of anonymity said schools should prioritise revision and learner welfare as classes resume.
“The break was long, and learners may struggle initially. Teachers will need to focus on helping them adjust before fully engaging the syllabus,” the teacher said.
The Ministry said Term One will run until May 1, 2026, and applies to all government and private education institutions, including international schools and universities.
