The Uganda Wildlife Authority (Uganda Wildlife Authority) has successfully introduced the first group of zebras into Ajai Wildlife Reserve, marking a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to restore wildlife populations and revive tourism in the West Nile region.

The animals were translocated to the reserve on Friday night under a carefully coordinated conservation programme aimed at rebuilding degraded ecosystems and strengthening biodiversity within the protected area.

The latest development comes just months after UWA introduced southern white rhinos to Ajai Wildlife Reserve, signalling a steady return of iconic wildlife species to a landscape that once supported a rich diversity of fauna.

In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, UWA said the zebra translocation is part of a broader restoration strategy focused on ecological recovery, habitat improvement, and long-term conservation sustainability.

Wildlife experts note that zebras play a crucial ecological role in maintaining grassland ecosystems. By feeding on tall and coarse grasses, they help regulate vegetation growth, open up grazing areas for smaller herbivores, and enhance overall habitat balance.

Conservationists further believe that the return of zebras will improve the reserve’s ecological health while increasing its attractiveness as a tourism destination. This, they say, could translate into new revenue streams and employment opportunities for communities surrounding the reserve.

Once among Uganda’s most important wildlife strongholds, Ajai Wildlife Reserve suffered severe wildlife loss over decades due to poaching, insecurity, and habitat degradation. The decline saw several species disappear from the area, including the historic northern white rhinoceros.

In recent years, UWA has intensified restoration efforts, including habitat rehabilitation, strengthened protection measures, and community engagement programmes aimed at supporting coexistence between wildlife conservation and local livelihoods.

The reintroduction of southern white rhinos earlier this year marked the beginning of a structured recovery programme. The arrival of zebras now represents another step forward in the long-term plan to rebuild the reserve’s ecological integrity.

Officials say continued species reintroduction, combined with improved protection and sustainable tourism development, is expected to restore Ajai Wildlife Reserve to its former ecological and economic importance.

The zebra translocation also aligns with Uganda’s broader conservation strategy, which seeks to protect biodiversity while leveraging eco-tourism as a driver of economic growth and improved livelihoods in communities living near protected areas.
