Entebbe — The owners and senior executives of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda on Wednesday met Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba in Entebbe as discussions commenced on the possible reopening of the company’s media operations following their recent closure.
The meeting, held at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters, brought together Gen. Muhoozi and officials from Nation Media Group, including businessman Rostam Aziz, Saam Aziz and Georgia Mutagaywa.
Also in attendance were Acting UPDF Director of Defence Public Information Col. Chris Magezi and journalist Andrew Mwenda.
The meeting followed the closure of Nation Media Group Uganda’s operations after Gen. Muhoozi directed security agencies to suspend the company’s activities.
The directive came after the Chief of Defence Forces accused the media house of biased reporting and conducting what he described as a sustained campaign against the government and its leaders.
According to a statement issued after Wednesday’s meeting, the discussions focused on concerns raised by the government regarding the media group’s editorial coverage and possible ways of resolving the impasse.
The statement said the owners of Nation Media Group committed to pursuing balanced, objective and professional journalism as discussions continue.
Following the meeting, Gen. Muhoozi said he would brief President Museveni on the outcome of the talks, adding that the Head of State would make the final decision on the reopening of the company’s operations.
The meeting marks the first publicly disclosed engagement between the two sides since the closure of Nation Media Group’s outlets, including Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda.
No timeline was immediately announced for the conclusion of the discussions or the possible resumption of the company’s operations.
