Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting regional peace, security and cooperation as preparations for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) High-Level Summit progress.
The preparations were highlighted during a meeting held in Munyonyo, Kampala, where the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, welcomed delegations and stakeholders involved in organising the summit.
Gen. Kainerugaba said the upcoming summit comes at a critical moment as AUSSOM continues to support Somalia’s security and stabilisation efforts. He commended participating countries, partners and the organising committee for their commitment towards ensuring the success and sustainability of the mission.
“The discussions are important in strengthening collective efforts among African countries and international partners to address emerging operational and logistical challenges affecting the mission,” Gen. Kainerugaba said.
He noted that the planned transition following the conclusion of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) mandate presents new challenges that require sustainable solutions to guarantee continued support for AUSSOM operations.
The CDF emphasised the importance of strategic partnerships, shared responsibility and coordinated action in safeguarding the progress made in Somalia’s pursuit of lasting peace and stability.
Uganda has been a key contributor to regional peace support operations, particularly through its role in Somalia, where it has supported efforts to counter insecurity and promote stability.
The AUSSOM High-Level Summit will bring together key stakeholders, including African Union representatives, troop-contributing countries and international partners, to discuss the future direction of the mission and strengthen commitments towards peace and security in Somalia.
The summit is expected to provide a platform for reviewing progress, addressing challenges and developing strategies to ensure the continued effectiveness of AUSSOM in supporting Somalia’s stability.
