Mubende High Court Sets October 10 Hearing for Busujju Election Petition

MUBENDE — The High Court in Mubende has set October 10, 2026, for the hearing of an election petition challenging the victory of NUP’s David Lukyamuzi Kalwanga in the Busujju Constituency parliamentary election.

The petition was filed by NRM candidate Vincent Nyanzi Makumbi, who is contesting the outcome of the parliamentary election.

Justice Mary Babirye, who presided over the proceedings, directed the three parties involved in the case, the petitioner, Mr Kalwanga and the Electoral Commission, to first agree on the procedure to be followed in hearing the petition.

The parties spent about three hours discussing the way forward before reaching an agreement on the conduct of the proceedings.

Justice Babirye also restricted the use of cameras inside the courtroom during the session.

The proceedings were at times tense, with Saulo Nyakaana Kalwanga, the brother of the elected MP, taking an active role in proceedings relating to the election dispute.

The petition will now proceed to hearing on October 10, when the parties are expected to present their respective cases before the High Court.

Election petitions are heard by courts to determine whether the declared results complied with electoral laws and whether any irregularities cited by a petitioner affected the outcome of an election.
