KAMPALA: Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo has secured a coveted five-star rating in the latest accommodation classification released by the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), placing it among Uganda’s most prestigious hospitality establishments.

Situated along the scenic shores of Lake Victoria in Munyonyo, the resort now ranks alongside Kampala Serena Hotel, Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Sheraton Kampala Hotel in the highest tier of the November 2025 national grading.

Upholding international standards

The classification exercise, conducted under the Uganda Tourism Classification of Accommodation Facilities and Restaurants Regulations, 2014, is intended to harmonise service standards and elevate Uganda’s competitiveness in regional and global tourism markets.

Under UTB guidelines, five-star status is reserved for establishments that meet rigorous international benchmarks. These include premium and spacious accommodation, refined architectural design, highly trained personnel, 24-hour guest services, and dining experiences that meet global culinary standards.

UTB officials say the grading framework not only provides assurance to travellers regarding service quality but also serves as a strategic tool for investors by identifying market strengths and infrastructure gaps.

Strategic boost for the sector

Industry stakeholders note that the five-star distinction significantly enhances Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo’s brand profile and reinforces its role as one of Uganda’s flagship conference and leisure destinations.

Over the years, the resort has built a reputation as a preferred venue for high-level conferences, diplomatic engagements and upscale leisure tourism.

The recognition comes amid a strong rebound in the tourism sector. Recent performance data indicates that tourism earnings reached Shs4.8 trillion in 2024 — a 26 percent increase from the previous year — surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Analysts argue that internationally benchmarked properties such as Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo are instrumental in attracting high-value travellers, including conference delegates, diplomatic missions and premium leisure visitors.

Broader classification outcomes

In the latest national grading, four establishments achieved five-star status, while 17 properties were awarded four stars. A further 23 facilities received three stars and 59 were classified as two-star establishments.

The exercise, aligned with East African Community standards, applies to hotels, lodges, motels and other licensed accommodation facilities across the country.

For Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo, the five-star accolade not only validates its longstanding reputation but also positions it prominently within Uganda’s ambition to strengthen its standing as a competitive and dependable global tourism destination.
