For more than a century, Indian migration to Africa has helped shape the continent’s commercial and industrial evolution. From the early traders and railway workers who settled along the East African coast to modern-day industrialists and financiers, members of the Indian diaspora have played a pivotal role in building businesses that power local economies and create thousands of jobs.

Despite arriving in unfamiliar environments, often with limited capital and facing cultural and regulatory challenges, many Indian immigrants demonstrated remarkable resilience, discipline, and entrepreneurial acumen. Over time, they established enterprises across key sectors including manufacturing, trade, real estate, hospitality, finance, aviation, and fast-moving consumer goods.

Today, several of these business leaders command multi-million and billion-dollar conglomerates that operate across multiple African countries. Their investments not only generate substantial revenues but also contribute significantly to employment, infrastructure development, and economic transformation across the continent.

Below is a closer look at ten prominent Indian entrepreneurs who have built formidable business empires in Africa, beginning with Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia.

After being expelled from Uganda in 1972 under former President Idi Amin, Ruparelia relocated to the United Kingdom before returning in 1985. He began his entrepreneurial journey by importing beer and salt from Kenya, steadily building what has become one of East Africa’s most diversified business empires.
