A team from the Uganda Media Centre has commended the steady progress of the Karamoja Museum and Cultural Centre in Moroto District, noting that construction has reached approximately 85–87 percent completion.

Located at the foot of Mount Moroto, the facility is being developed under the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities and is expected to become the first fully-fledged museum in the Karamoja sub-region. Officials say the project is aimed at preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Karamojong people while promoting tourism in the area.

Once completed, the museum will host a diverse range of archaeological, ethnographic and natural history collections. Planned exhibitions include traditional tools, artefacts, fossils, and displays highlighting key aspects of Karamojong life such as cattle keeping, pastoral traditions and warrior culture. Cultural education spaces and exhibition galleries are also part of the facility’s design.

The project, being executed by Advanta Uganda Limited, has entered its final phase, with remaining works focused on finishes, landscaping and interior installations. Engineers indicated that the architectural design integrates elements of the traditional manyatta style, blending cultural authenticity with modern construction standards.

Officials believe the Karamoja Museum will play a significant role in cultural preservation while boosting domestic and international tourism. The facility is also expected to create employment opportunities for local communities, stimulate small businesses and contribute to increased tourism revenue.

Karamoja Museum nearing completion — a major step in preserving culture and boosting tourism in the region.

Tourism authorities note that Karamoja’s unique landscapes, cultural diversity and historical heritage remain largely untapped. The addition of a museum is expected to strengthen the region’s positioning as a key tourism destination alongside other attractions in northeastern Uganda.

The initiative underscores government efforts to diversify Uganda’s tourism offerings beyond wildlife and adventure tourism, placing greater emphasis on cultural heritage as a driver of economic growth and community development.
