KAMPALA — Four pupils have been killed in a violent attack at a nursery school in Kampala, prompting concern over the safety of children in early learning institutions.
According to the Uganda Police Force, the incident occurred on Thursday morning at a daycare facility in Ggaba, Makindye Division. A man reportedly gained access to the school premises before attacking the children.
Police confirmed that four young pupils died at the scene. The victims were learners enrolled at the early childhood centre. Officers responded swiftly and arrested the suspect shortly after the attack.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the assailant posed as a parent seeking services and was allowed into the compound before the situation escalated. Authorities said the motive behind the attack is still under investigation.
Security personnel were deployed to manage crowds as distressed residents gathered outside the school. Witnesses said some members of the public attempted to confront the suspect, but police intervened and whisked him away to safety.
Police urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue, noting that further details, including the identity of the suspect and circumstances surrounding the incident, will be released in due course.
The incident has triggered widespread concern among parents and education stakeholders, with renewed calls for stricter access control, visitor screening, and improved security measures at schools, particularly those handling young children.
Authorities also indicated that security reviews around education institutions are being considered to prevent similar tragedies.
