KAMPALA — General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, has ordered the release of Brigadier General Johnson Abaho Namanya, four days after his detention on allegations of corruption.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Major Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, who said Brig‑Gen Namanya was freed following an “amicable and friendly meeting” during which he was cleared of all accusations. He will resume his military duties immediately.

“The Chief of Defence Forces has today released Brig Gen Johnson Namanya from detention after an amicable and friendly meeting in which the latter was cleared of all allegations leveled against him. Brig Gen Namanya will resume his duties accordingly,” Maj Magezi said.

Brig‑Gen Namanya was detained last Thursday alongside Major General Don William Nabasa, following orders from Gen Muhoozi over alleged corruption‑related offences. Both officers were held at a Special Forces Command facility along Entebbe Road.

The arrests were part of Gen Muhoozi’s ongoing efforts to enhance accountability and discipline within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). Observers say the swift resolution reflects a commitment to maintain order without prolonged detentions that could affect morale in the army.

While details of the allegations remain undisclosed, sources within the military leadership said internal discussions and reconciliation contributed to the decision to release Brig‑Gen Namanya. Analysts note that such high-profile detentions and subsequent releases underscore the evolving dynamics within the UPDF under Gen Muhoozi’s leadership.

Brig‑Gen Namanya’s reinstatement is expected to restore stability within the units he commands and signals the UPDF’s ongoing focus on strengthening institutional integrity and ethical conduct among senior officers.
