KAMPALA — The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to environmental conservation after emerging as the winner of the Lead Agency National Environment Sustainability Award at this year’s National Environment Sustainability Awards.
The prestigious accolade was presented during a ceremony held at Serena Hotel in Kampala on Friday evening, bringing together government agencies, environmental stakeholders, development partners, conservationists, and private sector actors committed to advancing environmental protection and sustainable development in Uganda.
The award recognises UWA’s sustained efforts in wildlife conservation, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity protection, and the promotion of sustainable environmental management practices across Uganda’s protected areas.
Speaking after receiving the award, UWA officials described the recognition as a testament to the dedication and hard work of conservation staff, researchers, wildlife rangers, and partners who continue to safeguard Uganda’s natural heritage.
The authority’s victory comes amid growing recognition of its science-based approach to conservation and environmental management. In recent years, UWA has strengthened its commitment to evidence-driven decision-making through increased research, data collection, and the adoption of modern technologies to support wildlife monitoring and habitat protection.
A notable milestone in these efforts was the recent release of the State of Wildlife Resources in Uganda Report 2026, a comprehensive publication that provides detailed insights into the status of wildlife populations, ecosystem health, conservation achievements, and emerging environmental challenges across the country.
The report has been hailed as a critical resource for policymakers, conservation practitioners, and researchers, providing valuable data to guide future conservation interventions and sustainable natural resource management.
Over the years, UWA has also expanded the use of innovative technologies to enhance wildlife protection and law enforcement. Among these initiatives is the deployment of the SMART Ranger Patrol System, which has improved the monitoring of protected areas, strengthened anti-poaching operations, and enhanced the collection of field data for conservation planning.
The authority has further intensified habitat restoration and ecosystem protection programmes aimed at preserving critical wildlife corridors, wetlands, forests, and other biodiversity-rich landscapes that support Uganda’s ecological balance.
This year’s National Environment Sustainability Awards were held under the theme “Innovation for Climate Resilience,” highlighting the importance of creative, science-driven, and sustainable solutions in addressing the growing impacts of climate change and environmental degradation.
Environmental experts at the ceremony noted that institutions such as UWA play a crucial role in advancing Uganda’s climate resilience agenda by protecting ecosystems that serve as carbon sinks, support livelihoods, and preserve biodiversity for future generations.
The award serves as a strong endorsement of UWA’s efforts to balance conservation objectives with sustainable development goals while contributing to national and global environmental commitments.
As Uganda continues to confront challenges related to climate change, habitat loss, and biodiversity decline, the recognition is expected to further strengthen UWA’s conservation agenda and inspire renewed commitment among stakeholders working to protect the country’s wildlife and natural ecosystems.
For UWA, the award represents not only a celebration of past achievements but also a call to sustain momentum in ensuring the long-term survival of Uganda’s rich biodiversity and natural heritage for generations to come.
