Kampala — Ugandan businessman Sudhir Ruparelia has led members of the Nepalese community in a blood donation drive in Kampala, in a show of solidarity with Ugandans as the country marked the 71st birthday of Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

The exercise, organised by the Non-Resident Nepali Association, was held at Acacia Mall and attracted dozens of donors, contributing units of blood to support supplies at Nakasero.

The initiative formed part of activities linked to the Kabaka’s birthday, in response to his continued call for increased voluntary blood donation to support patients in need, particularly expectant mothers and emergency cases.

Officials from the Nakasero Blood Bank welcomed the effort, noting that each unit collected would help ease pressure on Uganda’s blood supply, which often faces shortages.

Mr Samuel Davis Wante from the blood bank commended the Nepalese community for responding to the Kabaka’s appeal.

“This gesture is a powerful demonstration of unity and humanity. The Kabaka has consistently encouraged life-saving initiatives such as blood donation, especially to protect mothers and children,” he said.

Mr Ruparelia, who also serves as Nepal’s honorary consul in Uganda, said the exercise was aimed at supporting Uganda’s healthcare system, citing the need to address persistent blood shortages.

“There is a real shortage of blood in the country, and every unit counts. We are proud that the Nepalese community has come together to contribute to this cause,” he said.

Uganda continues to face periodic shortages of blood, with health authorities frequently appealing to the public to donate in order to sustain critical medical services.

Organisers said the drive aligns with broader health advocacy efforts associated with the Kabaka’s birthday activities, which have increasingly incorporated blood donation campaigns alongside other public health initiatives.

Participants described the exercise as a gesture of goodwill, reflecting the Nepalese community’s commitment to supporting Ugandan society beyond business and investment.
