KAMPALA – Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda has announced the gradual resumption of its operations after more than a month of suspension, bringing an end to a shutdown that disrupted the company’s print, broadcast and digital platforms.
The announcement was made by the Group’s Chairperson, Joe Muganda, in a press statement issued on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
Mr Muganda said the company’s services, including its newspapers, television, radio and digital platforms, would return progressively as the organisation finalises the necessary operational arrangements.
“Nation Media Group Uganda is pleased to announce the gradual resumption of our operations. Our print, radio, television and digital services will be restored progressively as we complete the required operational arrangements,” the statement said.
The development follows the suspension of operations that began on June 28, 2026, when armed security personnel surrounded the Nation Media Group headquarters in Namuwongo, Kampala.
The military operation brought printing activities at the Daily Monitor to a halt and forced the company’s broadcast outlets, including NTV Uganda and Spark TV, off the air.
The closure was ordered by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, whose directive effectively suspended the operations of one of Uganda’s largest independent media houses for over a month.
The shutdown drew widespread attention from media stakeholders and press freedom advocates, who expressed concern over its impact on access to information and media independence.
The latest suspension adds to the company’s history of previous closures. The Daily Monitor was shut down by authorities in October 2002 and again in April 2013, making the 2026 suspension the third major interruption of its operations in over two decades.
With the announcement of its reopening, readers, viewers and listeners are expected to regain access to the company’s news products as services are restored in phases.
Nation Media Group has not yet indicated when all its platforms will return to full operation but said further updates would be provided as the restoration process continues.
