Kampala — The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has announced her withdrawal from the race for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament, citing the need for unity, clarity, and harmony within her political party, the National Resistance Movement.
In a detailed statement released on her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Among said her decision followed wide consultations and deep introspection. She confirmed that she will not offer herself for the Speakership race, effectively stepping aside from the contest.
She expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the ruling party, and members of the 11th Parliament for the opportunity to serve as both Deputy Speaker and Speaker, describing the experience as an honour.
Among also thanked her family and friends for their support and solidarity throughout her leadership journey.
She pledged full support to candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the Party, urging Members of Parliament in the 12th Parliament to align with the official party position.
She further noted that she remains available for continued service to the country in any capacity assigned by the Party and the President.
On matters under investigation, Among stated that she will continue cooperating with relevant state organs to ensure that all allegations raised are thoroughly addressed.
She concluded her statement with a reaffirmation of loyalty: “For God and My Country.”
