Kayunga. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Kayunga District is mourning the death of its district chairperson and Senior Presidential Adviser on Special Duties, Mr Moses Karangwa Kaliisa, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a road crash on Sunday evening.

Mr Karangwa died after the vehicle he was travelling in reportedly overturned along the Kayunga–Jinja road at Ssuka in Nazigo Sub-county.

According to preliminary reports, the accident happened at about 8pm when the driver of the official vehicle lost control before it overturned.

He was rushed to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, where he later died.

The Minister for the Presidency, Ms Milly Babalanda, confirmed his death on Monday, describing him as a committed cadre who served both the ruling party and government with dedication.

“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of Senior Presidential Adviser on Special Duties and NRM chairperson for Kayunga District, Moses Karangwa Kaliisa, following a tragic road accident,” Ms Babalanda said in a statement.

She said Mr Karangwa had played a significant role in mobilising support for the ruling party in central Uganda.

Veteran mobiliser

Mr Karangwa was among the most influential NRM mobilisers in Kayunga and the wider central region.

He served as Kayunga District NRM chairperson and was regarded as a key political figure in local party structures.

He had also previously contested for the position of NRM vice chairperson for central region during internal party elections.

Although he did not secure the position, he remained active within the party and later served as Senior Presidential Adviser on Special Duties.

Before his rise in Kayunga politics, he had also served as NRM chairperson for Jinja Municipality, where he built his profile as a grassroots organiser.

His political career was largely defined by mobilisation efforts and strengthening party structures.

Political influence

Mr Karangwa was known for his active involvement in political mobilisation during election periods and remained closely associated with senior party leadership.

Supporters have described him as a dedicated mobiliser who contributed significantly to consolidating the NRM’s presence in Kayunga District.

His death leaves a leadership vacuum in local party structures at a time when the ruling party is strengthening mobilisation ahead of upcoming political activities.

Tributes

News of his death triggered an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, party supporters and residents.

Several local leaders described him as a committed political organiser whose contribution to the party would be remembered.

Family members said funeral arrangements would be communicated later.

His death once again draws attention to road safety concerns, with several prominent Ugandan leaders having lost their lives in road crashes over the years.
