President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Monday arrived at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for the first sitting of the first meeting of the first session of the 12th Parliament, where Members of Parliament are expected to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
The sitting is being presided over by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija in accordance with parliamentary procedures governing the election of the House leadership at the start of a new parliamentary term.
The election comes a day after the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus endorsed Hon. Jacobs Markson Oboth for Speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker during a meeting chaired by President Museveni at State House Entebbe.
The ruling party’s endorsement is expected to significantly influence the outcome of the vote as the NRM maintains a dominant presence in Parliament.
Security was heightened around Kololo Ceremonial Grounds as legislators, government officials, diplomats, and invited guests gathered for the historic sitting marking the commencement of the new parliamentary term.
President Museveni is also expected to address the House later in the day, with his remarks anticipated to outline the government’s legislative priorities and broader socio-economic agenda for the new Parliament.
The opening sitting marks a key constitutional process as the country transitions into the 12th Parliament amid expectations of renewed debate on governance, service delivery, economic transformation, and national development priorities.
