KAMPALA — Uganda and the Republic of Korea have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence cooperation, with both countries agreeing to expand collaboration in healthcare and medical training for the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

The commitment was made during a meeting held on Monday at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters, where the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, hosted Colonel Kim Seha, the Defence Attaché of the Republic of Korea to Uganda, accompanied by his secretary, Ms Choi Yun-Mi.

During the meeting, Gen. Muhoozi welcomed the Korean delegation and reflected on the longstanding friendship between Uganda and South Korea, describing the relationship as one that has evolved from diplomatic engagement into practical cooperation.

He commended the Republic of Korea Armed Forces for their professionalism and technological advancement, noting that the partnership continues to create opportunities for knowledge exchange and capacity building.

The CDF also reiterated Uganda’s intention to establish a permanent diplomatic mission in Seoul, saying the move would strengthen bilateral relations and support the country’s broader defence modernisation agenda.

A major focus of the discussions was expanding cooperation in healthcare and medical training. Gen. Muhoozi said South Korea’s internationally recognised expertise in advanced medical technology, hospital management, biomedical research and battlefield medicine presents valuable opportunities for collaboration with the UPDF.

He welcomed enhanced cooperation in the medical sector, describing it as an important step towards improving the welfare and operational readiness of Uganda’s armed forces.

In response, Colonel Kim thanked the CDF for the warm reception and pledged South Korea’s continued support in strengthening defence cooperation. He committed to facilitating medical-related training opportunities for UPDF officers, drawing on South Korea’s advanced healthcare systems and specialised expertise.

Colonel Kim also welcomed Uganda’s proposal to open a permanent mission in Seoul, saying it would further strengthen the longstanding partnership between the two countries.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to broadening cooperation in defence, technology, healthcare and other areas of mutual interest aimed at enhancing the welfare of military personnel and contributing to national development.

The meeting was also attended by the UPDF Chief of Joint Staff, Lt. Gen. Jack Bakasumba.
