When Should You See a Doctor? 5 Warning Signs to Know

KAMPALA — Not every headache, fever or bout of tiredness means you have a serious health problem. However, some symptoms should not be ignored, particularly when they persist, become severe or occur alongside other concerning changes.

Knowing when to seek medical attention can help people receive appropriate care and avoid complications.

For this edition of Infora Health Tips, here are five warning signs that deserve attention.

1. A persistent or high fever

Fever is often the body’s response to an infection, but it can have many causes.

A fever that persists, keeps returning or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms should be assessed by a health professional.

In Uganda, where malaria is common, fever should not automatically be assumed to be malaria or another particular illness. Appropriate testing can help establish the cause.

Parents and caregivers should also pay close attention when a child develops a persistent fever, especially if the child appears unusually weak, confused or seriously unwell.

2. Difficulty breathing

Difficulty breathing is a symptom that should be taken seriously.

It can occur with conditions such as asthma, respiratory infections and other illnesses. Mild breathing discomfort may have a range of causes, but sudden, severe or worsening difficulty breathing requires urgent medical attention.

If someone is struggling to breathe, it is important to seek emergency medical care rather than relying on home remedies or self-medication.

3. A persistent or unusually severe headache

Headaches are common and can be associated with dehydration, lack of sleep, stress and other everyday factors.

However, a headache that is unusually severe, persistent or repeatedly occurring should be discussed with a health professional.

A sudden and severe headache, particularly when accompanied by confusion, weakness, difficulty speaking, fainting or other unusual symptoms, requires urgent assessment.

4. Unexplained changes in weight or appetite

Changes in appetite or weight can happen for many reasons, including changes in routine, illness or emotional stress.

However, significant or persistent changes without an obvious explanation should not be ignored.

A health professional can assess the symptoms and determine whether further tests or treatment are necessary. People should avoid assuming that an unexplained change automatically points to a particular disease.

5. Unexplained bleeding, persistent pain or a new lump

Unexplained bleeding, pain that does not go away or a newly noticed lump should be medically assessed.

These symptoms can have many possible causes, and having one does not automatically mean that a person has a serious illness.

The important thing is not to ignore a symptom that persists or changes. Early professional assessment can help establish what is causing it and whether treatment is required.

When should you seek urgent care?

Some symptoms require immediate medical attention rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

These include severe difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, severe or rapidly worsening symptoms and other signs that a person may be seriously ill.

When someone appears seriously unwell, seek appropriate emergency medical care as quickly as possible.

Don’t diagnose yourself online

Health information on the internet can help people understand general symptoms, but it cannot replace a medical examination.

Different conditions can produce similar symptoms, and the correct diagnosis may require a physical examination, laboratory testing or other medical assessment.

Avoid taking prescription medicines or antibiotics simply because someone with similar symptoms used them. A qualified health professional can recommend appropriate treatment based on the individual patient’s condition.

The Infora Health Tips message

Your body can sometimes signal that something needs attention.

The key is to recognise persistent, unusual or severe symptoms and seek appropriate medical advice rather than ignoring them.

If you are worried about a symptom, speak to a qualified health professional.
