President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is among 20 Ugandans scheduled to receive national honours during Uganda’s 64th Independence Day celebrations at State House Entebbe on October 9, 2026.
The list of recipients was confirmed by Hajjat Zamina Malole, Chancellor of the Presidential Awards Committee in the Office of the President.
Mr Museveni is set to receive the Order of the Commander-in-Chief (Uganda Prisons Service Medal) in recognition of his leadership and contribution to peace and security.
According to the committee, the honour recognises heads of State and heads of government for visionary leadership and contributions to peace and security in Uganda, East Africa and Africa.
The award is provided for under Section 3(2), Second Schedule, Part I of the National Honours and Awards Act, 2001, as amended, which establishes the legal framework for national honours and decorations in Uganda.
The ceremony will form part of the national celebrations marking Uganda’s independence from British colonial rule in 1962.
This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme, “Embracing Our Sovereignty with Hope and Visionary Leadership.” The theme centres on national sovereignty, progress and the country’s future aspirations.
Mr Museveni has been President since 1986 and has previously received several national and international honours for his leadership and role in regional affairs.
The other 19 recipients are also expected to be recognised for their respective contributions to the country.
The Presidential Awards Committee recommends individuals for national honours in recognition of distinguished service and contributions to Uganda. The awards are intended to acknowledge public service and other contributions to national development.
