Washington, DC — US President Donald Trump has described Saturday night’s shooting incident at a Washington hotel as part of living in “a crazy world,” a day after gunfire disrupted a high-profile White House Correspondents’ dinner event.
“I wasn’t worried. I understand life. We live in a crazy world,” Trump said during an interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes.
US authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, who was arrested shortly after the incident. Police say he opened fire near a security checkpoint inside the Washington Hilton hotel, where senior US officials and media figures had gathered.
The FBI, alongside its counterterrorism task force, has launched a full investigation into what US Attorney General Todd Blanche said was a possible targeted attack on senior White House officials, though the motive remains unclear.
The incident forced the emergency evacuation of President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice-President JD Vance, and other top officials including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Karoline Leavitt, and Stephen Miller.
Trump later told reporters that the situation highlighted the dangers of public service, saying, “I can’t imagine that there’s any profession that’s more dangerous.”
The White House confirmed that the president “stands fearless” following what it described as an assassination attempt. The White House Correspondents’ Association called the incident “harrowing,” praising the Secret Service response that ensured the safety of thousands of guests.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities also reviewing the suspect’s alleged online activity and writings.
