KAMPALA — Kampala is set to witness an emotional outpouring this Sunday as thousands of motorists, motorsport enthusiasts, business leaders, and well-wishers gather for the Rajiv Ruparelia Memorial Drive, marking one year since the tragic death of businessman and rally driver Rajiv Ruparelia.

Rajiv, 35, son of businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia and a director in the Ruparelia Group, died on May 3, 2025, following a fatal crash at the Busabala Flyover along the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway.

Driving a high-performance Nissan GT-R, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which struck concrete barriers, overturned, and caught fire, bringing to a sudden end the life of one of Uganda’s most dynamic young entrepreneurs and motorsport enthusiasts.

One year on, family, friends, and the wider public are coming together to honour his life through a blend of charity, remembrance, and celebration of his legacy.

Day of Remembrance and Impact

The memorial programme will begin at 10:30 AM with a prosthetic leg donation drive at Mulago Hospital’s Orthopaedic Department. The initiative aims to support persons living with disabilities, reflecting Rajiv’s commitment to giving back to the community.

Later in the day, at 2:30 PM, the highly anticipated memorial drive will flag off from RR Pearl Tower One on Yusuf Lule Road.

Organised by TT Drags and Drifts Uganda under the Federation of Motorsports Clubs of Uganda, the convoy is expected to feature hundreds of high-performance vehicles, bikers, and rally supporters. Participants will drive through selected routes across the city before heading to Speke Resort Munyonyo.

The procession will culminate at Speke Resort Munyonyo Marina, a place closely associated with Rajiv, where he served as a director and spent significant moments with friends and family.

At 5:30 PM, a candle-lighting ceremony will be held at the marina, offering a solemn moment of reflection and tribute.

Legacy Beyond Speed

Organisers say the memorial is not only about remembering Rajiv’s passion for fast cars and rally driving but also about celebrating his contribution to Uganda’s business and hospitality sectors.

Widely regarded as a youthful and energetic leader within the Ruparelia Group, Rajiv played a key role in several major investments and was known for his hands-on approach to business.

His sudden death sent shockwaves across the country, drawing tributes from political leaders, the private sector, and the motorsport fraternity.

Call for Responsible Participation

Organisers have urged participants to maintain discipline and observe road safety during the procession, emphasizing that the event is intended as a respectful tribute.

Members of the public have been invited to take part in the activities as Kampala remembers one of its most recognizable young business figures, gone too soon, but not forgotten.
