Three people have died and four others sustained injuries following a fatal road crash involving a Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) vehicle and a crossing elephant in Murchison Falls National Park.
The incident occurred on the night of May 24, 2026, at about 8:00pm along the Arua highway section within the park in Nwoya District.
The vehicle, a Toyota Hiace registration number UA 20121AA, was reportedly carrying seven URA officials who were travelling from Arua City to Kampala after official duty.
According to preliminary police findings, the driver knocked a crossing elephant while driving through the park, causing the vehicle to lose control and overturn.
Three occupants died on the spot, while four others, including the driver, sustained injuries of varying severity.
Police said they responded promptly to the scene and evacuated the injured to Kiryandongo Hospital for emergency treatment before they were later referred to Kampala for further specialised care.
The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Anaka Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examination.
Authorities have since urged motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving through national parks and wildlife-protected areas, particularly at night, emphasizing strict adherence to speed limits to prevent similar tragedies.
Investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
