Kampala
 — Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Secretary General David Kabanda has paid tribute to the late businessman Rajiv Ruparelia, describing him as a generous supporter whose contribution was instrumental in the success of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 45th birthday celebrations in 2019.

Speaking during an interview on Direct Shot, an online political talk show hosted by Baba TV’s Joseph Kisitu, Mr Kabanda recounted Rajiv’s role in supporting the event, saying the businessman provided key logistical support free of charge.

Mr Kabanda, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kasambya County, said Rajiv offered the venue and catering services at Speke Resort Munyonyo, significantly reducing the cost of organising the celebrations.

“I was the first person to organise Muhoozi’s birthday in 2019 and I still remember everyone who contributed towards its success. Rajiv was the biggest sponsor because he provided a free venue at Speke Resort Munyonyo and catered for food and drinks for hundreds of guests who attended,” Mr Kabanda said.

According to Kabanda, several other individuals also made financial contributions towards the event. He named businessman Edwin Karugire, Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka and Foreign Affairs Ministry Permanent Secretary Vincent Bagiire among those who supported the celebrations, while Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze also made a contribution.

Kabanda’s remarks add to the growing list of tributes highlighting Rajiv’s support for community initiatives, youth programmes and public events.

Born on January 2, 1990, Rajiv was the son of businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, chairman of the Ruparelia Group. After completing his studies in the United Kingdom, he returned to Uganda and took on leadership responsibilities within the family business, eventually becoming managing director of the conglomerate.

During his tenure, the Ruparelia Group continued expanding its investments across hospitality, real estate, education, agriculture and leisure sectors.

Beyond his business interests, Rajiv earned recognition for supporting youth empowerment initiatives, sports development programmes and charitable causes.

Friends, business associates and beneficiaries frequently described him as approachable, supportive and committed to creating opportunities for young people.

Rajiv was also a familiar figure in Uganda’s motorsport fraternity, participating in national rally competitions and supporting the growth of motorsport in the country.

He died in a road accident on May 3, 2025, near Busabala Junction in the Munyonyo area. His death prompted widespread mourning, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, business executives, religious figures and members of the public.

Many remembered him not only as a businessman but also as a philanthropist whose contributions extended beyond corporate boardrooms into community development and social causes.

In recognition of his contribution to business, philanthropy and youth empowerment, Rajiv is expected to be honoured posthumously during the 9th PAP Global Awards scheduled for August 29, 2026, at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

According to the organisers, the award will recognise his contribution to Uganda’s socio-economic development and his efforts to support young people through mentorship and empowerment initiatives.

More than a year after his death, stories of Rajiv’s generosity and support for various causes continue to emerge, reinforcing his legacy as one of Uganda’s most prominent young entrepreneurs and philanthropists.

Supporters say the planned recognition will serve as a tribute to a businessman whose impact extended far beyond the companies he managed and whose influence continues to be felt across different sectors of society.
