MUBENDE — Police in Mubende District have arrested two suspects accused of slaughtering dogs and allegedly supplying the meat for sale in parts of Mubende Municipality.
The suspects, identified as James Twinamatsiko and Reponse Habimana, were arrested during a late-night police patrol along Mubende Main Street.
According to police sources, the arrests were made on June 13, 2026, at around 12:30 a.m. when officers on motorized patrol became suspicious of a motorcycle carrying a large polythene bag and a passenger.
The motorcycle, registration number UGP 078K, was reportedly signaled to stop for inspection. However, the rider allegedly ignored the orders, prompting a pursuit by police officers.
The suspects were later intercepted and arrested. A subsequent search reportedly led to the recovery of four slaughtered dogs concealed in the polythene bag.
Police say preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were transporting the meat for sale within Mubende Municipality. During interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted to involvement in the trade, although police said investigations are still ongoing to establish the full extent of the operation.
The two are currently detained at Mubende Central Police Station (CPS) on allegations related to animal cruelty and unlawful slaughter of animals. The case was registered under CRB 778/2026.
Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected illegal slaughter or sale of uninspected meat products to the relevant authorities.
The arrests come amid growing concerns over food safety and animal welfare, with authorities warning that the sale and consumption of unregulated meat products pose potential public health risks.
