Kampala. A section of drivers operating under the Fly Express transport association has accused the association’s leadership of failing to account for billions of shillings collected from members over the years, sparking calls for government intervention.
The drivers allege that approximately Shs7 billion has been collected from members during the past seven years, but comprehensive accountability for the funds has never been provided.
They further claim that Shs9 million earmarked for activities under the Parish Development Model (PDM) was not utilised for its intended purpose, raising concerns about transparency in the management of association resources.
“We have been contributing money for years, but many members remain unclear about how the funds have been spent. We are simply asking for accountability and transparency,” one of the affected drivers said.
The dispute has also revived disagreements over the ownership and management of the Entebbe Fly Express stage. According to the drivers, the stage was initially granted on a trial basis by State Minister for Transport, Fred Byamukama, to assess its operations and performance rather than serve as a permanent allocation.
The drivers allege that the current leadership has used the arrangement to consolidate control over the stage, a claim that has heightened tensions among members.
They are now appealing to the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, to intervene and help resolve the dispute.
The group is also calling on relevant government authorities to investigate the allegations, establish the status of the association’s finances and ensure accountability for all funds collected from members.
They argue that an independent review of the association’s operations would help restore trust among members and promote transparency in the management of driver welfare and development initiatives.
Efforts to obtain a response from the association’s leadership regarding the allegations were unsuccessful by press time.
