Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi Installed as Lay Canon in Kinkiizi Diocese

Former Prime Minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi has been installed as a Lay Canon of the Church of Uganda’s Kinkiizi Diocese in recognition of his service to the church and the wider community.

The installation ceremony took place on Sunday, July 26, 2026, under the leadership of Bishop Dan Zoreka, who presided over the installation of five Lay Canons and three Reverend Canons.

A Lay Canon is an honorary title awarded to distinguished lay members of the Anglican Church in recognition of their contribution to the church and society. The title does not confer clergy status or amount to ordination.

Mbabazi was among the five newly appointed Lay Canons, alongside Sunday Charles, Dr Birungi Mutahunga, Dr Peace Musinguzi Garuga, and Moses Katebire.

The appointment was first announced during the eighth Synod of Kinkiizi Diocese held at St Peter’s Cathedral, Nyakatare, earlier this year.

During the ceremony, the new canons were formally vested in canonical robes as part of the installation process. Mbabazi attended the event alongside his wife, Canon Jacqueline Mbabazi, who is also involved in church ministry.

Church leaders said the recognition was in appreciation of Mbabazi’s commitment to Christian values, community service, and his longstanding relationship with the Church of Uganda.

Throughout his public life, Mbabazi has maintained close ties with the Anglican Church, participating in various church programmes and development initiatives. He previously served in leadership roles supporting projects, including fundraising and construction efforts for All Saints’ Cathedral in Kampala.

Born in Kanungu District, western Uganda, Mbabazi is a lifelong Anglican. In 2024, he and his wife renewed their marriage vows at All Saints’ Cathedral in Kampala.

Mbabazi served as Uganda’s Prime Minister from 2011 to 2014 and remains one of the country’s notable political figures. He has in recent years taken a less active role in frontline politics while continuing to engage in community and social initiatives.

The installation ceremony attracted messages of congratulations from members of the public, with church leaders highlighting the importance of recognising individuals who contribute to the growth and service of the church and society.
