Inside the Ruparelia empire: The rise of one of Uganda’s biggest private business groups

Inside the Ruparelia empire: How one family built one of Uganda’s largest private business groups

KAMPALA — Over the past four decades, the Ruparelia family has built one of Uganda’s largest privately owned business groups, with investments spanning real estate, hospitality, education, agriculture and insurance.

Today, businesses under the Ruparelia Group touch millions of Ugandans through schools, hotels, commercial buildings, residential properties and agricultural exports, making the group one of the country’s most diversified private investors.

From exile to rebuilding

The family’s business journey was shaped by Uganda’s turbulent political history.

In 1972, the government of former President Idi Amin expelled Uganda’s Asian community, forcing thousands of families to leave behind businesses and property. Among those affected was the Ruparelia family, which relocated to the United Kingdom.

During his years abroad, Dr Sudhir Ruparelia worked in various jobs while accumulating savings and business experience. Following the restoration of relative political stability in Uganda during the mid-1980s, he returned to the country to pursue business opportunities.

His early ventures focused on trading consumer goods before expanding into foreign exchange services.

Growth through foreign exchange

In 1989, Dr Ruparelia established Crane Forex Bureau, one of Uganda’s early licensed foreign exchange bureaus during the country’s economic liberalisation.

The business expanded alongside Uganda’s growing financial sector and provided capital that supported investments in banking, real estate and other sectors.

The business later evolved into Crane Bank, which became one of Uganda’s largest indigenous commercial banks before it was taken over by the Bank of Uganda in 2016.

The takeover resulted in years of litigation between companies associated with Dr Ruparelia and the central bank, with courts delivering several judgments on different aspects of the receivership and disposal of the bank’s assets.

Property becomes the cornerstone

Real estate has since emerged as the largest component of the group’s investment portfolio.

Through Meera Investments Limited, the group owns office buildings, shopping malls, hotels, residential apartments and mixed-use developments across Kampala and other parts of Uganda.

Among its notable developments are Kingdom Kampala and Pearl Business Park, projects that have contributed to the changing commercial landscape of the capital.

Industry analysts regard the company among Uganda’s largest private property developers.

Expansion into education

Education has become another major area of investment for the family.

The group owns several private institutions, including Kampala Parents’ School, Kampala International School Uganda (KISU), Delhi Public School International and Victoria University.

The institutions enrol learners from Uganda and neighbouring countries, reflecting growing private sector investment in education over the past three decades.

Hospitality and tourism

The Ruparelia Group also maintains a significant presence in Uganda’s hospitality industry through the Speke Group of Hotels.

Its portfolio includes Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kabira Country Club, Forest Cottages, Bukoto Heights Apartments and Tagore Apartments.

Speke Resort Munyonyo has hosted numerous regional and international conferences, including African Union meetings, Commonwealth events and other high-level gatherings.

Agriculture and exports

Beyond property and hospitality, the group has invested in commercial floriculture through Rosebud Limited and Premier Roses Limited.

The farms export flowers to international markets, particularly Europe, contributing to Uganda’s agricultural export earnings while providing employment opportunities.

Insurance and diversified investments

The business portfolio also includes Goldstar Insurance Company Limited, further expanding the group’s interests beyond real estate, education, hospitality and agriculture.

The diversification strategy has enabled the group to establish investments across sectors that support Uganda’s services economy.

A family business faces tragedy

In May 2025, the family suffered a major setback following the death of Rajiv Ruparelia in a road crash.

Rajiv, who served as Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group, had played a key role in overseeing several of the company’s investments and was widely viewed as part of the next generation of leadership.

His death drew tributes from business leaders, government officials and members of the public.

Since then, the family has continued managing the group’s operations while supporting initiatives established in his memory.

A lasting footprint

More than 40 years after returning to Uganda, Dr Sudhir Ruparelia has built a business empire that ranks among the country’s largest privately owned investment groups.

Its companies operate in sectors ranging from real estate and hospitality to education, agriculture and insurance, employing thousands of Ugandans and contributing to investment, tourism, exports and private sector development.

While the group has experienced both rapid growth and legal challenges over the years, it remains one of Uganda’s most prominent examples of long-term private enterprise and business diversification.
