WAKISO — Police have arrested Asiimwe Christian, alias Don Chris, a former director of the now-defunct labour recruitment company Sky Pins, over allegations of obtaining money by false pretences and fraudulent recruitment of Ugandans for jobs abroad.
Police said Mr Asiimwe was arrested at about 2am on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at a bar in Zana, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District.
According to police, the suspect is accused of obtaining money from several people between 2022 and 2025 after allegedly promising to secure them employment opportunities in foreign countries.
The countries allegedly targeted included Canada, the United Kingdom, Qatar and Dubai, among others. The jobs reportedly promised ranged from positions as waiters and cleaners to caregivers.
Police said more than 500 alleged victims have so far recorded statements as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to the complainants, they allegedly paid between Shs5 million and Shs10 million each, depending on the job they were promised and the country in which they expected to work.
The arrest follows investigations into complaints lodged by people who allegedly lost money after seeking overseas employment through Sky Pins.
Police have not yet disclosed the total amount of money allegedly collected from the complainants, as investigations are still ongoing.
Mr Asiimwe remains in police custody as detectives continue to record statements from complainants and gather evidence relating to the allegations.
Police said the suspect will be taken to court in accordance with the law once investigations are complete.
The case comes amid continued warnings by authorities about fraudulent labour recruitment schemes in which unsuspecting Ugandans are promised lucrative jobs abroad in exchange for large sums of money.
Police have urged members of the public seeking employment abroad to deal only with licensed labour recruitment companies and to verify the legitimacy and licensing status of recruitment agents before making any payments.
Members of the public with information that could assist investigators have also been encouraged to report to the nearest police station.
Mr Asiimwe is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
