MUBENDE — Two people were killed and four children injured after a truck overturned and crashed into a Nissan Murano along the Mubende–Mityana road in Mubende District.
The crash occurred at about 8:25pm on Friday, August 14, at Kagavu in Kalonga Sub-county, according to preliminary police information.
Police said the Actros truck, tractor registration number UBK 132F and trailer UBK 710J, was travelling from Mubende towards Mityana when the driver reportedly lost control while descending a section of the road at Kagavu.
The truck is said to have crossed into the opposite lane before overturning onto an approaching Nissan Murano, registration number UBD 063R.
The trailer landed on the Nissan, trapping its occupants inside and killing two people at the scene.
Wamala Region Police spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, said officers from Mubende Police Station responded to the scene and launched a rescue operation.
He said a crane had to be deployed to lift the trailer off the Nissan to enable rescuers to reach the occupants.
“The rescue operation required the use of a crane to lift the trailer that had rested on top of the Nissan Murano so that the victims and deceased persons could be accessed,” Mr Kigozi said.
The injured children were identified as Johana Bala, 11, Isabella Rebecca, 5, Gabriella Kawini, 12, and Dorothy, 12.
One of the deceased was identified as Kenneth Kaijuka, 45, while the identity of the second man had not been established by the time of reporting.
The injured children were taken to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital in a police ambulance, registration number UP 4906, for medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were also taken to the hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Police and other responders later cleared the wreckage from the road, while arrangements were made to tow the damaged vehicles to the police yard as investigations continued.
Preliminary police findings point to possible careless driving as a factor in the crash. However, police said investigations were still ongoing to establish what exactly caused the truck driver to lose control.
Mr Kigozi said investigators were examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“We have commenced inquiries to establish the exact circumstances under which the driver lost control and caused the crash,” he said.
The incident has renewed concerns about road safety along the Mubende–Mityana highway, particularly at sections characterised by steep slopes.
Police have urged motorists using the road to exercise greater caution, maintain appropriate speeds and remain vigilant when approaching slopes and other hazardous sections.
Investigations into the crash are continuing.
