Kampala — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially launched the 10th Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE 2026) at Speke Resort Munyonyo, using the platform to highlight Uganda’s tourism potential, economic progress, and public health preparedness.

Addressing delegates, the President also reassured both Ugandans and international visitors about the recent Ebola outbreak, saying the disease can be effectively managed if detected early.

“I want to start by giving you a few hints of science because I really saw that many people were panicking,” Museveni said, explaining that Ebola spreads through close physical contact and can be controlled through early reporting and medical care.

He noted that the outbreak originated from neighbouring DR Congo, adding that government opted for targeted measures rather than closing borders completely, while restricting activity in high-risk border markets.

Turning to tourism, Museveni described Uganda as uniquely positioned along the Equator, with stable and moderate climate conditions that make it attractive to visitors year-round.

He also referenced the historical description of Uganda as the “Pearl of Africa,” saying the country’s natural beauty, culture, food, and peace make it a competitive global destination.

“When you are talking of Uganda as a tourism destination, you are talking about comfort, culture, food and peace,” he said.

On economic growth, the President said Uganda has transitioned into a lower-middle-income economy and is now focused on achieving upper-middle-income status, driven by commercial agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

He further announced plans to review visa policies to improve tourism access, including extending visa durations for visitors.

Officials from the tourism sector welcomed the President’s commitment, noting strong post-pandemic recovery in the industry and increased international arrivals.

Juliana Kagwa said Uganda’s tourism strategy continues to position the country as a unique destination on the global stage, while industry leaders credited peace, infrastructure development, and major international events for boosting growth.

The expo, organised by the Uganda Tourism Board, brings together tourism stakeholders, investors, and international buyers to showcase Uganda’s attractions and strengthen global tourism partnerships.
