Residents of Bukiise Sub-county have welcomed the commissioning of new borehole projects aimed at improving access to clean and safe water in an area that has for years faced persistent water shortages.

The initiative, spearheaded by Asha Mafabi Nabulo in partnership with Nile Humanitarian Development Agency, was officially launched in Nalugugu Parish.

The project targets communities that have long struggled with limited access to safe water sources, forcing many households to travel long distances in search of water, a burden that has largely affected women and children.

Speaking at the launch, a representative of the area Woman Member of Parliament noted that access to safe water remains a critical foundation for improved public health, household productivity, and overall community development. The representative emphasized that addressing water scarcity is essential in reducing preventable diseases and improving living standards.

Sironko District, particularly Bukiise Sub-county, has for years experienced pressure on existing water sources due to population growth and increasing demand. This has often resulted in overcrowding at water points and reliance on unsafe water sources in some communities.

Local leaders say the newly installed boreholes are expected to ease pressure on existing facilities, reduce the distance residents travel to fetch water, and improve sanitation and hygiene standards across the sub-county.

The intervention is also expected to have broader socio-economic benefits, including freeing up time for household members—especially women and school-going children—who often spend hours collecting water. This, leaders say, could improve school attendance and support small-scale economic activities.

Community members expressed optimism, describing the project as a timely response to a long-standing challenge. Many noted that improved access to clean water would significantly improve health outcomes and reduce the daily hardships associated with water collection.

Local leaders further commended the partnership approach between development actors and community leadership, saying such collaborations remain key to addressing service delivery gaps in rural areas. They called for continued investment in water infrastructure to ensure sustainability and wider coverage.

The borehole project adds to ongoing efforts aimed at improving basic service delivery and livelihoods across Sironko District, where access to safe water remains one of the most pressing development concerns.
