KAMPALA: Businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia has grown from a small trader into one of Uganda’s most prominent investors, building a diversified business empire that spans real estate, hospitality, education, insurance, media, and floriculture.

His rise has been shaped by decades of entrepreneurship, beginning after his return to Uganda in 1985 with modest savings accumulated while living and working in the United Kingdom. Today, the Ruparelia Group operates dozens of companies and is among the country’s largest private-sector employers.

Born in Uganda, Ruparelia left the country in 1972 after the expulsion of Asians by the Idi Amin government. While in the United Kingdom, he worked various jobs, including in supermarkets, factories and as a taxi driver, while pursuing his studies.

In interviews over the years, Ruparelia has said he returned to Uganda in 1985 with approximately $25,000 in savings, seeing an opportunity to invest as the country emerged from years of political instability.

He initially ventured into the importation and sale of alcoholic beverages before expanding into foreign exchange trading through Crane Forex Bureau. The business later evolved into Crane Bank, which became one of Uganda’s leading commercial banks before its closure in 2016.

Over the years, Ruparelia diversified his investments through the Ruparelia Group, whose interests now include commercial and residential real estate, hotels, education institutions, insurance, media and flower exports.

Some of the group’s hospitality investments include Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kabira Country Club, Forest Cottages, Dolphin Suites, Tourist Hotel and Speke Apartments. The company has also invested heavily in commercial property development across Kampala.

In the education sector, the group owns several schools and higher learning institutions, including Victoria University, Kampala Parents’ School and Delhi Public School International.

The businessman has also invested in insurance through Goldstar Insurance, floriculture through Premier Roses, and broadcasting through Sanyu FM, among other ventures.

Speaking at previous public events, Ruparelia has said he measures success by the opportunities his businesses create for others.

“My success is when I see that I started a project, I created employment for people and at the same time, the people who are using my establishments are also making money from it. That is my success,” he said.

Government officials have on several occasions credited private investors, including Ruparelia, for contributing to employment creation and investment in sectors such as tourism and hospitality.

Beyond business, the Ruparelia Foundation supports community initiatives through education, healthcare, sports sponsorships and charitable programmes. The foundation has also partnered with various organisations on projects benefiting vulnerable communities.

Through Victoria University and other education institutions under the group, scholarships are offered annually to support students pursuing higher education.

Ruparelia’s business journey—from working casual jobs abroad to building one of Uganda’s largest private business groups—has frequently been cited as one of the country’s most notable entrepreneurial success stories.
