UWA Open Park Days: Why Every Ugandan Should Visit Queen Elizabeth and Lake Mburo National Parks

For many Ugandans, national parks remain destinations associated with foreign tourists and expensive safari holidays. Yet a recent journey through western Uganda proved otherwise, revealing that some of the country’s greatest treasures are not only within reach but are waiting to be explored by every Ugandan.

From tracking one of Africa’s most celebrated lions to sailing through waters filled with hippos and crocodiles, standing astride the Equator, enjoying evenings around a crackling campfire and witnessing spectacular wildlife at close range, the experience demonstrated why Uganda’s protected areas rank among the finest tourism destinations on the continent.

The expedition formed part of Week Two of the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s (UWA) #UWAOpenParkDays campaign, an initiative designed to encourage domestic tourism ahead of the nationwide Open Park Days scheduled for September 25–27, when entry for both visitors and private vehicles will be free.

The journey began at the Uganda Wildlife Authority headquarters in Kampala before the team travelled west, making scenic stopovers that showcased Uganda’s diverse landscapes and hospitality en route to Lake Mburo National Park.

Uganda’s Most Accessible Safari

At Lake Mburo National Park, Acting Chief Warden Kwesiga Karamagi William welcomed the visitors and introduced them to one of Uganda’s most accessible wildlife destinations.

Unlike the common perception that game drives require expensive four-wheel-drive vehicles, Karamagi explained that the park’s well-maintained road network allows ordinary vehicles to comfortably access most of its attractions.

Visitors can easily encounter giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, elands and numerous bird species while enjoying one of Uganda’s most scenic and relaxed safari experiences.

The park’s close proximity to Kampala also makes it an ideal destination for families, students and first-time visitors seeking an affordable wildlife adventure.

A Luxurious Gateway to the Wild

The journey then continued to Queen Elizabeth National Park, where the team checked into Acacia Wilderness Mweyaoverlooking the spectacular Kazinga Channel.

Blending modern comfort with breathtaking wilderness, the lodge offered exceptional hospitality, delicious cuisine and panoramic views that perfectly complemented the safari experience.

As night fell, guests gathered around a glowing campfire beneath star-filled skies, sharing stories while surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the African wilderness.

Meeting Africa’s Most Famous Lion

One of the highlights came during an experiential lion tracking expedition led by UWA rangers.

The team encountered Jacob, arguably Africa’s most famous lion and a global symbol of wildlife conservation.

Jacob survived a poacher’s snare that cost him one of his hind legs—an injury that would have ended the life of most wild animals. Today, thanks to continuous monitoring by Uganda Wildlife Authority using satellite tracking technology, he continues to roam the plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park and inspires conservation efforts worldwide.

His remarkable resilience has earned him international recognition as “the lion with nine lives.”

Then Came Shaun

Nature offered another unforgettable surprise when the visitors spotted Shaun, one of Queen Elizabeth National Park’s best-known leopards.

Leopards are among Africa’s most elusive predators, making sightings exceptionally rare.

Watching Shaun calmly emerge from the bush, displaying his striking coat and graceful movements, became a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many members of the team and a reminder of the extraordinary wildlife thriving within Uganda’s protected areas.

The Magic of the Kazinga Channel

The adventure continued aboard a boat cruise along the famous Kazinga Channel.

Every stretch of the waterway revealed remarkable wildlife encounters.

Large pods of hippos occupied the channel while massive Nile crocodiles rested along the shoreline. Herds of elephants gathered at the water’s edge as countless bird species transformed the skies into a vibrant display of colour and sound.

The cruise showcased why the Kazinga Channel remains one of Uganda’s most celebrated wildlife attractions.

Standing Between Two Hemispheres

Another memorable stop was the iconic Kikorongo Equator Monument.

Here, visitors experienced the unique opportunity to stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and the other in the Southern Hemisphere while learning about one of the world’s most fascinating geographical landmarks.

The monument has become a favourite stop for both domestic and international travellers exploring western Uganda.

Conservation That Changes Lives

Beyond wildlife, the journey highlighted the positive impact of tourism on neighbouring communities.

The team visited the Buhingo III Women Group, whose members have benefited from tourism revenue shared by UWA.

Through conservation-related support, the women now produce beeswax jelly, liquid soap and other products that generate sustainable household incomes.

Their success illustrates how wildlife conservation benefits not only protected areas but also the communities living alongside them, creating stronger partnerships in safeguarding Uganda’s natural heritage.

A Scenic Farewell

Before returning to Kampala, the team stopped at Kyangabi Crater Resort, overlooking the picturesque crater lakes of western Uganda.

The resort impressed visitors with its elegant accommodation, exceptional cuisine, conference facilities, wellness amenities and breathtaking scenery, making it an ideal destination for travellers wishing to extend their safari experience.

Whether your dream is to photograph giraffes at Lake Mburo, track the legendary Jacob, search for Shaun the leopard, cruise the Kazinga Channel, stand on the Equator or simply relax around a campfire in the wilderness, this is an opportunity to discover why Uganda truly is the Pearl of Africa.
