KAMPALA — For years, Sudhir Ruparelia has been known largely for his business interests, which include real estate, hospitality, education and other investments.
His name is associated with some of Kampala’s prominent commercial buildings and hotels, but his public profile also includes a long record of charitable activities involving education, healthcare, sports and community initiatives.
Much of this work is carried out through the Ruparelia Foundation, which was established by Mr Ruparelia and his wife, Jyotsna, in 2012 under the motto “Enriching Lives Together.”
The foundation says its programmes have reached more than 10,000 people through initiatives in education, healthcare and community development.
Beyond the figures, however, are individual beneficiaries whose experiences illustrate the different areas in which the foundation has provided support.
Eye care in Bukedea
One of the foundation’s recent healthcare interventions took place in Bukedea District in March 2026, where it organised the Rajiv Memorial Eye Camp at Bukedea Teaching Hospital in memory of Mr Ruparelia’s late son, Rajiv Ruparelia.
The medical camp was initially planned as a three-day exercise, but the number of people seeking treatment exceeded expectations.
According to information from the foundation, about 3,500 people turned up for medical attention, prompting organisers to extend the programme.
More than 500 eye surgeries were eventually carried out, while other patients received examinations, medication and prescription glasses.
Among those who attended the camp was Esther Amoding, a 104-year-old woman seeking medical assistance.
During his visit to the camp, Mr Ruparelia met Ms Amoding and handed her a wheelchair.
The encounter became one of the memorable moments of the outreach, with Ms Amoding responding with prayers.
The Bukedea intervention forms part of the foundation’s wider healthcare activities, which have included medical camps, support to health facilities, equipment donations and assistance to individuals facing medical challenges.
Giving back to his birthplace
Mr Ruparelia’s charitable activities have also extended to Kasese District, where he was born.
Born in Kabatoro in 1956, he later returned to the area through a healthcare intervention that included the donation of hospital beds to Lake Katwe Children’s Hospital, according to information about the foundation’s activities.
The gesture linked his charitable work to a place with a personal connection to his early life.
For the communities receiving such assistance, however, the significance is less about the donor’s history and more about the practical needs being addressed.
Education support
Education has remained another area of focus.
The Ruparelia Foundation says it has supported more than 100 students through scholarships and school-fee assistance in Uganda and abroad.
Among the beneficiaries associated with the foundation’s education support is musician Patrick Sennyonjo, popularly known as Fresh Kid.
Fresh Kid was supported with education at Kampala Parents’ School, according to information provided about the scholarship programme.
His story illustrates one of the challenges faced by children whose families may struggle to meet education costs while they pursue careers in entertainment or other fields.
The foundation has also supported children from vulnerable backgrounds through various community programmes.
Support to the young King
Another account of the businessman’s support came from Queen Mother Best Kemigisa during the burial ceremonies of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The Queen Mother publicly acknowledged Mr Ruparelia among people who had supported the education of her son during his formative years.
“Sudhir Ruparelia is among those who educated my son in high school,” she said.
She also recalled that the support extended beyond school fees, saying Mr Ruparelia provided the young King with access to gym facilities at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
The late King Oyo became monarch at the age of three following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in 1995.
Ms Kemigisa’s remarks offered a personal account of support extended to the young monarch away from the formal ceremonies associated with the institution of kingship.
A broader community footprint
The foundation’s activities have not been limited to individual beneficiaries.
It has supported organisations and initiatives involving vulnerable people, including the Missionaries of the Poor and the Franciscan Sisters in Kamwokya.
It has also participated in prison outreach programmes and provided assistance to families facing difficult circumstances.
Another area of support has been sport.
The foundation has been associated with activities involving rugby, athletics, football and combat sports. Its support has included the Busoga Marathon, Uganda Rugby Union activities, kickboxing events involving Moses Golola and football tournaments.
It has also supported Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich.
For athletes and sports organisations, such interventions can provide assistance with equipment, events and participation, although the scale and nature of individual contributions vary from one programme to another.
Conservation
Environmental conservation has also featured in the foundation’s charitable activities.
The organisation says it has invested more than Shs100 million in wildlife-related initiatives, including land and feeding programmes and partnerships intended to support Uganda’s natural heritage.
Such interventions form a smaller part of its overall charitable activities but broaden the foundation’s work beyond education, healthcare and direct community assistance.
Some of the assistance associated with Mr Ruparelia has taken place outside formal foundation programmes.
Over the years, individuals have publicly spoken about receiving help with school fees, medical treatment and other personal difficulties.
Some of these accounts are difficult to independently verify because they involve private assistance and are not accompanied by public records.
Nevertheless, the stories have contributed to a wider public perception of Mr Ruparelia as a businessman who has provided financial support to individuals and institutions beyond his commercial interests.
One such account was given by President Yoweri Museveni, who recalled seeking about Shs600 million to support the vaccination of his cattle.
According to the President’s account, he initially contacted then Stanbic Bank chief executive Philip Odera about the matter. Mr Museveni said the request did not immediately receive the response he expected.
He later said Mr Ruparelia learnt of his need and asked where the money could be delivered.
The President recounted the incident as an example of Mr Ruparelia responding quickly to a request for assistance.
Support for public causes
Mr Ruparelia’s charitable activities have also included fundraising drives involving public institutions and causes.
In 2012, he contributed to fundraising efforts for St Henry’s College Kitovu.
In 2026, he donated Shs100 million to a charity run organised around Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s birthday. The proceeds were intended to support health-related causes, including assistance to children battling cancer.
Such donations have often brought together political, religious, business and cultural figures, placing the businessman’s philanthropy within Uganda’s broader culture of private support for public causes.
Cardinal Wamala’s appreciation
Religious leaders have also acknowledged Mr Ruparelia’s support.
Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, the former Archbishop of Kampala, has spoken about his relationship with the businessman and his support during and after his time as Archbishop.
“I still remember vividly how you supported me when I was Archbishop of Kampala. I wish to express my profound gratitude to you for your love, care, and generosity,” Cardinal Wamala said.
The remarks reflect another aspect of Mr Ruparelia’s charitable engagements, which have extended to religious institutions and leaders.
Mr Ruparelia’s philanthropic journey is closely linked to his own life story.
He was among Asians expelled from Uganda during the government of Idi Amin in the 1970s. After leaving the country, he lived in the United Kingdom, where he worked various jobs before eventually returning to Uganda in 1985.
He returned with relatively modest resources and began building businesses that would later expand into several sectors.
Today, the Ruparelia Group has interests in areas including real estate, hospitality and education, with a portfolio that includes commercial properties and hotels.
His business success has made him one of Uganda’s most prominent entrepreneurs, while his philanthropic activities have provided another dimension to his public profile.
Measuring philanthropy beyond money
The impact of charitable giving is often difficult to capture in financial terms alone.
A scholarship may be reflected in a school fee payment, but its longer-term impact may only become apparent years later when a beneficiary completes their education.
Similarly, the value of an eye operation may not be fully represented by the cost of the procedure. For a patient who had struggled with poor eyesight, restored vision can affect mobility, independence and the ability to work.
That is why the stories emerging from the Ruparelia Foundation’s programmes tend to focus on individual experiences.
In Bukedea, it was patients seeking eye treatment. In schools, it has been students receiving educational assistance. In Kasese, it was support to a health facility linked to Mr Ruparelia’s birthplace.
For the Queen Mother of Tooro, the memory is of educational support extended to her son when he was a young King.
For religious leaders and community organisations, the association is with contributions towards causes they were pursuing.
These accounts do not by themselves provide a complete measure of the impact or scale of Mr Ruparelia’s philanthropy. But taken together, they show that his charitable activities have operated across several areas of Ugandan society.
As his business interests continue to expand, the quieter part of his public record remains the network of institutions, communities and individuals that have received support over the years.
For Mr Ruparelia, that record sits alongside the buildings, hotels and businesses with which his name is more commonly associated.
And for the beneficiaries, the significance of the assistance is often less about the identity of the donor than the moment in which the support arrived.
