KASAWO, Mukono — The spirit of unity, talent, and empowerment was on full display at Kasawo Playground in Mukono District as Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, Manager of the Office of the National Chairman (ONC), presided over the Friends of Sheikh Mafo Easter Monday Football Tournament as the chief guest.

The tournament, held in Kasawo Sub-county, Nakifuma County, drew several youth teams from across the region, including Kasawo FC, Ndese FC, Sheikh Shafic Mafo FC, and Nagalama FC, all competing in a high-spirited showcase of local football talent.

In the opening match, Kasawo FC defeated Ndese FC, earning a bull, gold medals, and a cash reward presented by Namyalo. Ndese FC, the runners-up, received a silver trophy, medals, and a goat. The second match saw Nagalama FC edge out Sheikh Shafic Mafo FC in a tense penalty shootout, walking away with a bull, medals, and additional cash prizes.

Adding excitement to the tournament, popular musician Gravity Omutujju featured among the players for Mafo FC, keeping fans on their feet as he contributed to the team’s pressure against Nagalama.

In a unique gesture of encouragement, Namyalo rewarded each goal scorer with 100 US dollars, sending a strong message about the value of discipline, dedication, and performance.

Speaking at the event, Namyalo emphasized the transformative role of sports in youth empowerment. “Engaging young people through sports nurtures talent, instills discipline, and reduces crime. These initiatives also provide avenues for income and opportunity,” she said. She further highlighted that talent development aligns with President Yoweri Museveni’s vision of uplifting the “bazzukulu” through skills and opportunity.

The tournament’s chief organiser, Sheikh Mafo, praised youth-led initiatives for their impact on community development. He noted that many players mentored through similar competitions have progressed to top football clubs, earning livelihoods and serving as role models for younger generations.

He also credited the prevailing peace and stability in Uganda as a foundation that allows youth-focused programmes to flourish. “Our young people can thrive when they are given opportunity, guidance, and a platform to showcase their talent,” he said.

Namyalo’s presence reinforced ONC’s commitment to grassroots engagement, using sports as a tool to inspire, unite, and economically empower young people. The Easter Monday tournament not only celebrated football but also strengthened community bonds, leaving players and spectators motivated, optimistic, and proud of their community’s young talent.
