President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has welcomed the endorsement of Hon. Jacob Oboth-Oboth as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate for Speaker of Parliament and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as candidate for Deputy Speaker following a Sunday evening caucus meeting at State House Entebbe.
The meeting brought together members of the first NRM Caucus of the 12th Parliament, where party leaders endorsed the two legislators for the top parliamentary positions ahead of the election of Parliament’s leadership.
President Museveni said the endorsement reflects the party’s commitment to disciplined leadership and focus on service delivery as Parliament prepares for its new term.
Following the meeting, Museveni took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, where he congratulated both Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa and reaffirmed the party’s position on the selection of leaders.
During the caucus, the President emphasized that the NRM has consistently rejected identity-based politics, urging legislators to prioritize national needs over personal or group interests when selecting leaders.
“When choosing leaders, we must first ask what needs to be done for the people before asking who should do it,” Museveni said.
He cautioned against tribalism, religious divisions, and gender chauvinism, stressing that leadership selection should be based on competence, discipline, and commitment to national transformation.
Museveni further reiterated that the ruling party’s core agenda remains wealth creation and socio-economic transformation, to be achieved through productive sectors such as agriculture, services, artisanship, and information and communication technology (ICT).
The endorsement of Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa is expected to significantly shape the leadership structure of the 12th Parliament as the NRM consolidates its position ahead of parliamentary elections.
Party officials indicated that consultations will continue as Parliament prepares for the formal election of its top leadership in the coming sessions.
