KALANGALA — President Yoweri Museveni has pledged to address long-standing infrastructure and service delivery challenges in Kalangala District, including the deployment of additional ferries, expansion of electricity coverage, and improvements in health and education services.

The President made the commitments on Monday while campaigning for National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Idah Nabayiga ahead of the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election scheduled for June 24.

Addressing residents at a campaign rally, Mr Museveni urged voters to support Ms Nabayiga, saying her election would enhance cooperation between the district leadership and the central government and help accelerate the implementation of development programmes.

“Today, I campaigned in Kalangala in support of the NRM Woman MP candidate, Idah Nabayiga, and urged the people to vote for her so we can strengthen coordination and accelerate service delivery,” Mr Museveni said in a message shared on his social media platforms.

The President said government would add two ferries on the Nakiwogo–Lutoboka and Bukakata–Kalangala routes to improve transport links between the islands and the mainland, a long-standing concern among residents and business operators.

He also pledged to extend electricity to more parts of the district and improve access to healthcare and education services.

“I assured them that Government will add two ferries on the Nakiwogo–Lutoboka and Bukakata–Kalangala routes, extend electricity, improve health and education services, and continue supporting wealth creation through palm oil, the Four-Acre Model, and sustainable fishing,” he said.

Kalangala, an island district on Lake Victoria, is one of Uganda’s leading palm oil-producing areas and has benefited from several government-led wealth creation initiatives aimed at improving household incomes.

Mr Museveni said continued investment in commercial agriculture, fisheries and rural infrastructure remains critical to transforming livelihoods in the district.

The by-election was triggered by the death of former Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, who was elected on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket. The contest has attracted candidates from both the ruling NRM and opposition parties, with political observers viewing it as an important test of support in the island district.

Monday’s rally marked the final phase of the NRM campaign as voters prepare to elect a new district Woman MP on Wednesday.
