Business leader Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia has received the prestigious Silverback Award, recognising decades of investment that have helped transform Uganda into one of the region’s leading destinations for tourism, conferences and hospitality.
The award was presented during the Uganda Tourism Association Annual Tourism Banquet at Sheraton Kampala Hotel, where industry leaders honoured individuals whose investments and leadership have made a lasting impact on the country’s tourism sector.
For many in Uganda’s tourism industry, the recognition reflects more than the success of a businessman. It acknowledges the contribution of an investor whose developments have supported employment, expanded tourism infrastructure and strengthened Uganda’s position in the regional hospitality market.
Over the years, Dr. Ruparelia has invested heavily through the Ruparelia Group in hotels, resorts and leisure facilities that today serve thousands of local and international visitors annually.
His hospitality portfolio includes Speke Resort Munyonyo, Speke Hotel, Kabira Country Club, Forest Cottages, Dolphin Suites and several other establishments that have become key pillars of Uganda’s tourism industry.
These investments have enabled Uganda to host numerous international conferences, government summits, corporate events and sporting competitions, generating substantial economic activity for hotels, transport operators, tour companies and other tourism-related businesses.
Tourism experts note that the country’s growing reputation as a meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) destination has been strengthened by the availability of internationally accredited conference facilities, particularly at Speke Resort Munyonyo, which has hosted some of Africa’s most significant regional gatherings.
Industry players welcomed the recognition, describing Dr. Ruparelia as one of the private sector investors whose confidence in Uganda has consistently translated into tangible economic benefits.

The Silverback Award adds to a growing list of national and international honours recognising Dr. Ruparelia’s contribution to Uganda’s economy through strategic investments in hospitality, real estate, education and other sectors.
As Uganda continues to position tourism as a key driver of economic growth, stakeholders say investors such as Dr. Ruparelia remain instrumental in expanding the country’s tourism infrastructure, creating jobs and attracting international visitors whose spending supports businesses across the wider economy.
