Victoria University will hold its 10th graduation ceremony on October 19 and 20, bringing together graduates, families, university officials and other stakeholders to celebrate academic achievement and the growing importance of practical skills in a changing job market.
The two-day event will take place at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala under the theme “The Future is Here,” reflecting the university’s emphasis on innovation, technology and preparing students for the demands of the modern workplace.
The ceremony will begin at 7am on both days. Graduates from the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Health Sciences will graduate on Monday, while those from the Faculty of Business and Management and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences will take part on Tuesday.
Popularly known as the “University of You,” the institution says its approach to education seeks to equip students with skills they can apply beyond the classroom, as employers increasingly demand practical competence alongside academic qualifications.
One of the initiatives supporting this approach is the Work-Integrated Learning Transcript, which documents practical skills, industry projects, professional competencies and workplace experience gained during a student’s studies.
The initiative is intended to help graduates demonstrate their practical exposure to prospective employers as they enter an increasingly competitive labour market.
Under Vice Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Muganga, the university has emphasised student-centred learning, technology integration and practical education as part of its response to changing employment needs.
The focus comes as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science and other emerging technologies continue to influence how people work, learn and conduct business.
Victoria University offers technology-related programmes including the Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics, and Bachelor of Software Engineering.
Its academic programmes also cover fields such as Law, Pharmacy, Nursing Science, Business, Journalism, Tourism, Agriculture and Education, alongside diploma and postgraduate qualifications.
At postgraduate level, programmes include the Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Public Health, Master of Science in Cyber Security and various Master of Laws specialisations.
The breadth of programmes reflects the institution’s attempt to serve students pursuing established professional careers while responding to opportunities in emerging industries.
Prof. Muganga has advocated the integration of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies into education, placing digital literacy, adaptability and innovation among the competencies graduates need to navigate a changing economy.
However, graduating from university remains only one step towards employment or entrepreneurship. Young professionals must also translate their qualifications, practical experience and networks into opportunities in a labour market where competition remains strong.
For the graduates and their families, the ceremony will mark the culmination of years of study and financial investment. It will also signal the beginning of a new phase in which graduates are expected to apply their knowledge, develop professionally and contribute to their communities.
The university’s 10th graduation will therefore celebrate individual achievement while drawing attention to the role of higher education in developing skills for Uganda’s workforce and supporting wider social and economic development.
