Kampala — The Ministry of Works and Transport on Wednesday conducted a formal handover ceremony, ushering in a new leadership team tasked with overseeing Uganda’s transport and infrastructure development agenda.

The ceremony marked the official assumption of office by Minister of Works and Transport Fred Byamukama, who takes over from Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala following the recent Cabinet reshuffle by President Museveni.

Also assuming new roles were State Minister for Transport Julius Muganda Wandera and State Minister for Works Siraji Musa Ali, who replaced Fred Byamukama and Musa Ecweru, respectively.

The handover ceremony, held at the ministry headquarters in Kampala, brought together senior government officials, technocrats and ministry staff to witness the transition of leadership.

Speaking during the event, officials emphasized the importance of continuity in implementing ongoing infrastructure projects and transport sector reforms aimed at supporting Uganda’s economic growth and regional connectivity.

Byamukama assumes leadership of one of the government’s most strategic ministries, which is responsible for overseeing road infrastructure, transport regulation, aviation, rail transport and maritime services.

His appointment comes at a time when the ministry is implementing several major projects, including national road upgrades, bridge construction, urban transport improvements and efforts to modernize the country’s transport systems.

The incoming minister pledged to build on the achievements registered by his predecessor and work closely with stakeholders to ensure efficient delivery of infrastructure projects.

Officials noted that Uganda’s transport sector remains central to the country’s development ambitions, particularly under the government’s agenda to improve connectivity, facilitate trade and attract investment.

Julius Muganda Wandera, who now assumes the position of State Minister for Transport, is expected to support efforts aimed at improving transport services, road safety and the efficiency of the country’s transport networks.

Meanwhile, Siraji Musa Ali takes over as State Minister for Works, a portfolio that plays a key role in supervising public infrastructure development and maintenance.

The ministry paid tribute to the outgoing leadership for their service and contribution to the sector, particularly in advancing critical infrastructure projects across the country.

In a statement, the ministry expressed confidence in the new team and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality infrastructure and transport services to Ugandans.

“The Ministry of Works and Transport extends its heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing leadership for their dedicated service and warmly welcomes the incoming team as they take on these vital responsibilities in developing the nation’s infrastructure and transport systems,” the statement said.

The leadership transition comes as Uganda continues investing heavily in infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic transformation, job creation and regional integration.

Observers say the new leadership will be expected to sustain momentum on ongoing projects while addressing challenges related to road maintenance, transport safety and financing for large-scale infrastructure development.
