Matembe Arrested For Impersonation-Gen Muhoozi Confirms

Kampala — Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said former Ethics and Integrity Minister Miria Matembe has been arrested over allegations of impersonation.

In a post published on his official X account on Sunday, Gen. Muhoozi stated:

“Matembe has been arrested for impersonation. Mzee only has one sister. Auntie Kajubiri.”

He did not disclose where Ms Matembe was being held or provide further details about the alleged offence or the agency responsible for the arrest.

Earlier, Gen. Muhoozi had posted messages on the same platform suggesting that Ms Matembe was in custody. In one response to a social media user, he wrote:

“That one. I have her too.”

The statement followed days of uncertainty over Ms Matembe’s whereabouts after her family reported that security personnel had raided her home in Luzira.

Her husband, Nehemiah Matembe, told journalists that the family had lost contact with her following the operation and did not know where she had been taken.

The reported arrest comes amid an ongoing public exchange between Ms Matembe and Gen. Muhoozi. In recent days, the former minister had criticised the Chief of Defence Forces over his public statements and conduct, accusing him of undermining state institutions.

Meanwhile, reports also emerged that lawyers and civil society activists Sarah Bireete and Eunice Musiime were detained by security operatives. Information surrounding the circumstances of their detention remained unclear by press time.

By publication, there had been no official statement from the Uganda Police Force, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, or other security agencies detailing the allegations against Ms Matembe or confirming the circumstances of her arrest.

Efforts to obtain a response from Ms Matembe’s lawyers were ongoing.

The developments add to growing public interest surrounding the case, with further details expected as investigations continue.
