The Woman Member of Parliament for Sironko District, Mafabi Aisha Nabulo, has called on the government to expedite the relocation of residents living in landslide-prone areas, warning that thousands remain at risk as the rainy season approaches.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Ms Nabulo said Sironko District and other parts of the Elgon sub-region have experienced recurring landslides over the years, leading to the loss of lives, destruction of property, displacement of families, and damage to agricultural land.

She told Parliament that at least 1,645 people affected by previous landslides are yet to be relocated despite visible cracks continuing to widen in vulnerable areas.

According to the legislator, the expected heavy rains could further increase the risk of landslides, exposing more communities to danger if urgent intervention is not undertaken.

Ms Nabulo acknowledged the government’s previous efforts to support affected communities but urged the Office of the Prime Minister to fast-track the relocation programme before the situation deteriorates.

She said her appeal was informed by assessments and reports from district authorities, which indicate that several communities remain highly vulnerable to landslides.

The legislator stressed that timely relocation would help protect lives, livelihoods, and property while reducing the impact of disasters on communities in the Elgon region.

Landslides have repeatedly affected districts on the slopes of Mount Elgon, including Sironko, Bududa, Manafwa, Bulambuli, and Namisindwa, particularly during periods of prolonged heavy rainfall.

Ms Nabulo urged the government to prioritise disaster preparedness and provide lasting solutions for families living in high-risk areas to minimise future loss of life and property.
